Walking and Climbing
Newtonmore, located at the Southern part of Badenoch and Strathspey, is close to the geographical centre of Scotland and, in terms of ease of access to all the main walking areas, the practical centre. It is renowned for the variety of walking available and we have walking guides and some maps at the cottages. Whether you enjoy the high-level mountain tops of the Cairngorms, the open ground of the moors, or the wooded forest trails of Glenmore & Inshriach… you will be spoilt for choice. A full range of walks in the area can be seen on the Walk Highlands website. A new long distance route, the East Highland Way, runs from Fort William to Aviemore through Newtonmore
Some of our favourites are:
The Newtonmore Wildcat trail, 11km, which can be reached 200m from the cottages. Walking guides for the trail are in the cottages
- Farleitter Crag and Uath Lochans, 4km
- Loch an Eilein, Rothiemurchus, 7km
- Meall a Bhuachaille and Creagan Gorm, 16km
- Carn Dearg, Carn Sgulain & A’Chailleach, 25km
For Corbetts and Munros, Newtonmore is an excellent centre for mountains in the Cairngorms, Monadhliath ranges, Creag Meagaidh and even Ben Nevis. For climbing please consult the Ukclimbing website : http://www.ukclimbing.com/logbook/map/ which lists all the local crags and mountains. Best known locally is Creag Dubh on the edge of Newtonmore, but there are many more particularly around Cairngorm.
The Newtonmore area is a paradise for cycling, both road cycling and mountain biking. On road we recommend:
- Newtonmore – Glen Truim – Laggan – Newtonmore 19 miles
- Newtonmore – Laggan – Dalwhinnie – Newtonmore 32 miles
- Newtonmore – Kincraig – Insh – Kingussie – Newtonmore 21 miles
- Newtonmore – Aviemore – Newtonmore 30 or 33 miles depending on route taken
The Sustrans route 7 from Carlisle to Inverness passes through the village.
For mountain biking, there are facilities at Laggan Wolftrax, just outside Laggan, and at Glenlivet. There is excellent mountain biking from the door in the Monadhliath, in the Ardverikie estate, Glen Feshie and Rothiemurchus. There is lockable bike storage on request also use of a bike stand; bike tools can also be borrowed if necessary.
